(P232) Black Families Defying Diabetes Together: a Culturally Adapted Intervention for Diabetes Management and Prevention

A family-centered approach at the interpersonal level may provide better support for diabetes prevention and management among Black families than the conventional individual-level approach and facilitates shared diabetes messaging and opportunities for improving family health communications. Cultural adaptations can encourage discussion and provide insight into how cultural experiences are related to and can be tailored to diabetes prevention and management. This poster reviews a project that examines a culturally tailored approach (Defying Diabetes Program) for Black families using a combination of evidence-based programs (DSMES, National DPP) and community health worker (CHW) facilitation using surveys and interviews to measure program acceptability and lifestyle change. Biomarkers were also collected.
