(P400) Addressing Suicide Risk in People with Diabetes

People with diabetes experience suicidality at twice the rate of the general population. Yet, suicide can be a difficult topic to discuss. People who experience suicidal ideation often worry about how others might react, and those around them aren’t sure what to say or how to help. Addressing suicide directly helps to destigmatize it and provides an opportunity to support patients. These poster authors share a very personal account from the perspective of someone who has diabetes and faced her own suicidal ideation and attempt. The poster will inform you about risk factors specific to people with diabetes, reveal how to start a conversation about suicidality, and list steps that you can take to promote the safety of your patients.
