(P514) Introducing a Low-Cost Tele-Retinal Camera for Diabetes-Related Retinopathy Screening in Resource-Constrained Settings

About 95 million people with diabetes worldwide suffer from diabetes-related retinopathy (DR), a complication that leads to irreversible blindness. This condition is preventable through early eye screenings via retinal imaging. However, over 40% of those with DR live in resource-constrained settings, where many remain unscreened due to social inequities manifesting in 1) inaccessibility to ophthalmologists and 2) low portability and high cost of current retinal cameras. This indicates a gap in DR management and necessitates an affordable, telehealth-enabled technology that connects eye specialists to non-ophthalmological settings. This poster reviews global DR screening barriers and introduces the feasibility of integrating a low-cost, tele-retinal camera in primary care clinics, which can increase access to early intervention and reduce the global burden of complications of diabetes.
