(P402) Diabetes and Mental Illness: Tools for Providing Excellent Care

Current research shows that patients with mental illness receive substandard education on diabetes risk and management. There are challenges and benefits when providing individualized diabetes education in the inpatient behavioral health setting. This poster reviews a study on the effectiveness of Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) in this setting using the Diabetes Self-Management Questionnaire (DSMQ) before and after patients received education using a pre and post-method, and how diabetes self-management is enhanced by utilizing an interdisciplinary team along with additional services.
