(P535) Utilizing a Dietary Information System to Improve Timing of Insulin Administration After Blood Glucose Testing

According to ADA recommendations, prandial insulin should be given with a meal to help prevent the rise in glucose levels expected with carbohydrate intake. Prior hospital practice was to obtain finger sticks at set times, not in correlation to the meal delivery. This poster outlines how adopting a dietary information system (Vision) allows staff to see the status of patients' trays and when they will be delivered. Also, by incorporating a "stop" in the MAR, nurses are also now able to link the most recent finger stick value to their mealtime or sliding scale insulin. If the value is older than 60 minutes, the value will not link, and nursing is encouraged to get a new result.
