Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is proposed to affect a significant portion of people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and is associated with an increased risk of kidney failure, cardiovascular events, and mortality. However, direct estimates for the prevalence of CKD and T1D are not available. The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is a program of studies, which combines interviews and physical examinations to assess the health and nutritional status of people in the US. This study aimed to directly estimate the prevalence of CKD in people with T1D in the US from 2015 to 2018 using NHANES data. CKD was common in people with T1D and evaluable eGFR and UACR based on recent US data. Since the absolute number in NHANES was small, these prevalence estimates should be interpreted cautiously and validated in other cohorts.
