Assessing alcohol intake is a critical part of obtaining a thorough history. Alcohol use of any kind has the potential to have a tremendous impact on diabetes outcomes. Overuse issues, such as Alcohol Use Disorder and "heavy drinking" (drinking 15 or more drinks per week for men or 8 or more drinks per week for women) are of particular concern. This poster outlines assessing alcohol use in a non-judgmental manner, assisting clients in exploring their habits, and setting reasonable, outcome-oriented goals for diabetes management and alcohol use as part of quality diabetes education.
