(P111) Perceived Health Risks and Healthy Behavior Intentions Among Low-Income Postpartum Women with Recent Gestational Diabetes

Postpartum women with recent GDM have a significant risk of developing T2D within 6 years. Diabetes screening is recommended within 3 months postpartum and annually thereafter. Breastfeeding and healthy dietary/physical activity behaviors can mitigate the risks of developing T2D. Children born from a GDM-complicated pregnancy have an increased risk for childhood obesity, insulin resistance, and adult T2D. This poster reviews a study to 1) ascertain intentions of low-income postpartum women with recent GDM to engage in recommended breastfeeding, healthy dietary/physical activity behaviors, and follow-up healthcare including blood glucose screening; and 2) determine perceptions about breastfeeding recommendations and maternal/child health risks related to a diabetes-complicated pregnancy among low-income postpartum women with recent GDM via an anonymous 47-item (written/oral) survey.
