(P216) Developing Diabetes Education Videos for Deaf Populations Who Communicate Using American Sign Language

Deaf populations experience diabetes at higher rates than hearing populations and rely on diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) programs to support their understanding of diabetes. Many DSMES programs provide written educational handouts. Given that American Sign Language (ASL) is a visual language that is not text-based, these written resources do not support or match the language and culture of Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) populations who communicate using ASL. Translation of diabetes education content from English to ASL requires multiple steps and engaging native ASL users is critical to ensure accuracy. This poster reviews a project to develop diabetes education videos to support the delivery of diabetes education in ASL.
