(P101) Adherence and Persistence to Oral Semaglutide versus DPP-4is Among People with T2D in a US Real-World Setting

Semaglutide is the only oral glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) indicated for glycemic management in people with type 2 diabetes. Dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4is), another oral antidiabetic medication (ADM), have historically been associated with better adherence and persistence than injectable GLP-1 RAs. This retrospective database study investigated treatment patterns in patients newly initiating oral semaglutide versus DPP-4is. Patients in both cohorts demonstrated similar medication adherence and persistence. Oral semaglutide patients utilized fewer ADM classes 12 months post-index than DPP-4i patients; notably, 23% of DPP-4i patients used a GLP-1 RA post-index. Although real-world treatment compliance is similar between oral semaglutide and DPP-4is, the increased utilization of other ADMs observed in the DPP-4i cohort suggests that oral semaglutide has additional clinical benefits.
