(P103) Diabetes Affects Men and Women Differently: A Review of the Evidence

The incidence and prevalence of diabetes among young women has increased. Gestational diabetes increases a woman’s lifetime risk of developing T2D and independently increases a woman’s lifetime risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Early menopause and premature ovarian insufficiency are each associated with an increased risk of developing T2D. The risk of developing heart failure is remarkably higher in women with diabetes compared to men with diabetes. There is a stronger association between diabetes and incident atrial fibrillation among women than men. This poster will discuss how diabetes impacts women and men differently, and explore recent evidence in this field.
