D33 - Update Your Knowledge of Pharmacotherapeutic Options for Managing Cholesterol

People living with diabetes are twice as likely to have heart disease or a stroke than those without diabetes. The American Diabetes Association recommends routine monitoring of cholesterol. In addition to diet and lifestyle modifications, the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association recommend initiation of pharmacotherapy based on individual heart disease risk (determined by calculating 10-Year Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease Risk). In the last ten years, healthcare professionals have seen the approval of several, novel pharmacotherapy drug classes for patients with the highest risk of cardiovascular disease. This presentation will review the pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and cardiovascular outcomes of bempedoic acid, and its impact on current guidelines and treatment for cholesterol/ASCVD risk in persons with and without diabetes, in addition to an overview of other non-statin therapies. A secondary prevention case will be used to illustrate the use of these medications in practice.
