Providing health education alone is generally not enough to lead to long-term behavior change. An alternative to the expert approach is that of a coaching approach. Health coaching is an emerging field that involves a partnership between provider and client that embraces thought-provoking and creative processes that inspire and support behavior change. This session will review key coaching concepts that elicit autonomous motivation, increase the capacity to change, and facilitate a change process through visioning, goal setting, and accountability. The presenters will provide case studies using the coaching approach and how they differ from more traditional approaches to DSMES. Attendees will leave with proven approaches that facilitate client engagement and behavior change.
