One in three individuals with diabetes will develop eye disease which can lead to permanent vision loss or blindness. Adults with vision loss are 2-3 times more likely to experience depression compared to persons without vision loss,1 and can experience reduced quality of life due to inability to work, fewer social interactions, loss of mobility, and fewer activities. In this session, hear from a patient advocate who has experienced vision loss; learn about findings from focus groups exploring vision loss and mental health; and discuss how clinicians can address, manage, and support the transition of vision loss. This session will share recommendations on maintaining mental wellness and resources for use when working with patients living with diabetes and vision loss.
