The modern approach to patient-centered care nourishes the whole person as a cornerstone of the ADCES7 self-care behaviors. By examining the impact of diet culture on emotional health and the internal conflict that develops from standard nutrition education, we can understand why people with diabetes often develop a complicated relationship with food. Case studies and interviews offer insight into the daily life and unique food-focused challenges that people with diabetes have. These accounts provide the opportunity for the DCES to enhance nutrition-focused language and communication skills. With this understanding, we discuss the role of the DCES as critical in framing healthy eating for sustainable, long-term health.
