The treatment of obesity is multifactorial and emphasizes that obesity is a chronic medical condition, necessitating a treatment approach similar to that of diabetes. The mainstay of treatment is often a combination of comprehensive lifestyle interventions and medications. This presentation will summarize current pharmacotherapy guideline recommendations for chronic weight management. It will include a summary of older therapeutic agents and an expanded focus on newly approved treatment agents, particularly discussing the pharmacology, dosing, efficacy and safety outcomes, place in therapy, and patient education pearls. The audience will go home with the knowledge of the current treatment options, what the future may hold in the treatment of obesity, and how to apply this knowledge in their clinical practice.
