In the MILES-2 Study, one of the largest cohort studies to date, severe diabetes distress was reported in one in four people with type 1 diabetes, one in five people with insulin-treated type 2 diabetes, and one in ten people with non-insulin-treated type 2 diabetes. Greater diabetes distress is associated with suboptimal diabetes self-management, A1C, and impaired general emotional well-being. This session will review one institution’s aim to identify diabetes distress and work collaboratively to improve diabetes care and behavioral health outcomes in an adult internal medicine clinic at a health safety net hospital. Presenters will discuss clinical experience and evidence-based practices for the DCES working with patients who experience diabetes distress.
