The frequency of bias and discrimination in our society is staggering. For many people living with diabetes, discrimination is an everyday reality. Discrimination has been defined as the unfair or prejudicial treatment of people and groups based on characteristics such as race, gender, weight, religion, age, disability, or sexual orientation. According to the American Psychological Association, discrimination is associated with higher levels of stress and health disparities. Our panel discussion will provide insights into the impact of discrimination based on race, sexual orientation, and disability, and recommendations on how DCES and DSMES programs can enhance the development of trusting and respectful relationships with individuals living with both diabetes and discrimination.
