Hispanic Americans live longer than White Americans or African Americans and a 2022 study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine showed that this increased life expectancy has been maintained from 1900 to 2019. This longevity paradox exists despite having a high prevalence of T2D and liver disease. Many contributing factors have been postulated including lower smoking use, increased social support, tight family support, and the noteworthy consideration of the protective effect of certain heritage foods. This session will discuss the science behind these heritage foods and their influence on the dietary quality of Hispanic subgroups, as well as provide attendees with key nutrition and diabetes recommendations and strategies on how to use these foods to help improve health outcomes.s.
