People with diabetes may not realize there is a connection between their oral health and their overall health. As a result, patients and families need to be educated about the oral health-body connection. Any effort at making a dent in this crisis requires collaboration between medical and dental professionals. This session discusses the relationship between poor glycemic management and oral conditions such as gingivitis and periodontal disease and how this impacts the oral-systemic connection. The presenter will describe evidence-based research on this topic and attempt to close the gap for clinicians to enable them to explain the negative impact on lifespan and long-term complications for their patients with diabetes.
