Pancreas transplantation is an established surgical procedure that achieves durable insulin independence, improves quality of life, and prolongs life for patients with T1D and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Though the vast majority of people with diabetes have T2D, only 20% of pancreas transplant recipients have T2D. Recent results from multiple institutions and national databases demonstrate outstanding results of pancreas-kidney transplants in patients with T2D and CKD, similar to those in patients with T1D. As a result of favorable outcomes, more pancreas-kidney transplants are being performed in patients with T2D. Because CKD and T2D are so prevalent in African American, American Indian, and Hispanic patients, there are many Americans with these conditions that may potentially benefit from pancreas transplantation.
