F06 - Navigate the Effects of Cognitive Impairment in Diabetes Care and Education

Cognitive impairment diminishes a person's ability to focus, process, retain, and recall information. For most clients, this impacts self-care and the ability to manage their diabetes effectively. People with diabetes may not fully understand why they struggle with diabetes management. Many blame themselves, and their CDCES struggles to figure out what is underlying their client's difficulty. This session will discuss how to recognize when cognitive impairment is present and how to gain a greater understanding of the approach, support, and guidance clients with cognitive impairment need around their treatment decisions. Attendees will learn how to address cognitive impairments and manage interventions and referrals for these clients.
